Toby Martin started 2010 on winning form by becoming the AEGON Under-18 Boy’s National Grand Prix Masters Champion. The tournament was played at the National Tennis Centre in Roehampton with a draw of 16 of the top British players who had qualified from the previous Grand Prix events held throughout the Winter at various venues.

Having joined TeamBath Tennis in September 2009, Toby has been training very hard to improve his technical and physical game and produced a solid, confident performance to take the title. The victory is especially sweet for the TEAMBATH MCTA Group as it is the second consecutive year they have won the title following Richard Gabb’s success in 2009.

Martins advanced through the tournament beating top seed Gavin Davison in the quarter-final with a convincing 6-0 7-6 victory. His semi final proved slightly more challenging where he recovered from a 4-6 1-4 deficit against Connor Glennon from Leicestershire to take the match 4-6 6-4 6-2. In the final, Toby beat Joe Mills from Sussex 6-4 6-3, securing a break in each set.

Toby was delighted with his performance and believes that sacrificing some power in his ground strokes at times decreased his unforced errors. He commented, “My serve and return worked well, this all built my confidence. I also had a great week of preparation at Bath so was feeling really good going into the tournament.”

Barry Scollo and Roxanne took the TeamBath MCTA Academy Team to the event and were delighted with the victory. Scollo commented, “Toby has played simple, effective tennis. He has done the basic things so well and has come away with a great victory”. Toby recently won his first World Junior (ITF) Event in India and will be competing in Denmark, Germany and Luxemburg this February looking to build on his winning performance.

The TeamBath MCTA Academy was well represented in the National Masters Event, with Sid Hazarika losing in the quarter finals in a closely contested match against Ben Davis 5-7 3-6 and Taro Keens who won her opening match against Brielle Luton 6-4 6-2 but then lost to Caitlin Hindmarsh 4-6 3-6.
