Moodie one point from Doha glory Print E-mail

Wesley Moodie came within a point of winning the doubles title in the year's opening ATP event in Doha, Qatar on Friday.

The South African, who joined the Monte Carlo Tennis Academy last year, held a match point with partner Jeff Coetzee in the Qatar Exxonmobil Open final. They eventually succumbed 6-4, 4-6, 11-9 (match tie-break) to Germany's Phillip Kohlschreiber and David Skoch of the Czech Republic.

Moodie Vanquishes Murray/Mirnyi Print E-mail

The Monte Carlo Tennis Academy’s Wesley Moodie has begun 2008 in style by reaching the doubles semifinals at the Qatar Open in Doha, Qatar.

The South African teamed up with partner Jeff Coetzee to see off the newly-formed and much-hyped partnership of Max Mirnyi and Jamie Murray 6-4, 7-5 on Wednesday.

Anna Fitzpatrick and Ana Veselinovic both made confident starts in the $25,000 Deza Trophy in the Czech Republic after reaching the second round in singles and doubles on Tuesday.

Fitzpatrick, who arrived in Valasske Mezirici having just been named as the LTA’s Female Junior Player of the Year, upset No. 8 seed Stanislava Hrozenska of Slovakia 6-4, 6-3 in her opening match, while Veselinovic followed up her two qualifying wins with a 7-6(3), 6-0 victory over Andrea Berkova in the main draw.

Fitzpatrick Qualifies in Czech Republic Print E-mail

Anna Fitzpatrick has qualified for the main draw of the $25,000 Zubr Cup in Prerov, Czech Republic after a convincing victory over local favourite Nikola Frankova in the final qualifying round.

Anna, the top seed in the qualifying competition, defeated Lenka Jurikova in her opening match and followed with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Frankova, the Czech who reached the quarterfinals last year and captured the doubles title.

Fitzpatrick Narrowly Loses Out Print E-mail

Anna Fitzpatrick got through to the final round of qualifying of the Grade 1 Eddie Herr Junior Championships before bowing out in three sets to Taylor Ormond from Canada.  Just one round away from securing her place in the main draw, Anna is hopeful she might still qualify for a lucky loser place.

At the Nick Bollettieri Sports Academy in Bradenton Florida it took Anna three sets before emerging as victor in the first round of qualifying.  Pitched against American Alexandra Angelescu, Anna breezed through the first set taking it 6-1 due to a combination of aggressive play and a flurry of errors from her opponent.
